Forgot a title, so came back and did it just now

Thurs., March 13, 2003 - Talked to Myrtle in the a.m.  Katie came about 10:00.  She brought chicken, potato wedges and 2 "Long Johns" with choc. frosting.  Tom came for supper & brought barbecued ribs.  The usual routine with 2 games of Rummikub.

Fri., March 14, 2003 - The movie tonight was "The Big Fat Greek Wedding."  It was funny.

Sat., March 15, 2003 - Mary brought my groceries & ironed for me.  Nancy had to work at the office today.  Talked to Greta in p.m.

It's rare that I get to correct Grandma, but it's "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".  She was right, though, it's pretty funny.  It has been many years since I've watched it, so I should maybe give it another go for a good laugh.

I would be remiss if I didn't note that today is Grandpa and Grandma's wedding anniversary.  Not that I need a reminder of how much I miss them, but I was going through the reunion book from the Nielsen/Iversen reunions, which started in 1988.  Looking at the very first sign-in sheet, there are several that were there for that first reunion that are not with us today.  But, so thankful that we had many of them for as long as we did.

Belated happy birthday to Grandma

Fri., March 7, 2003 - Talked to Jenny -- she said she's real busy so I'd better get a permanent here.  I really need one.  So I'll be getting one tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.  Nancy will take me.  Saw "Coal Miner's Daughter" in the evening.  Talked to Greta in evening.

Sat., March 8, 2003 - Nancy took me to get permanent.  Went to Stauffer's for dinner.  Nancy went home right away.  Dolores came in evening for several games of Rummikub.

Sun., March 9, 2003 - Nancy came at noon with dinner from Popeye's.  The usual Sunday chores.  Mitch and Anna were here in p.m. while Mary attended her writers' group meeting.

I certainly meant to post on Grandma's actual birthday, but you know how things go. I did think of her often during the day.  Maybe it's weird, but I take comfort in birthdays that are past the age when the person would still likely be around.  So, 110 years isn't unheard of but certainly isn't usual.  Those birthdays aren't quite so bittersweet for me.

And bad news in 2022 with Kevin Andersen's wife, Mary, dying recently of pancreatic cancer.  She was one of my favorite family members.  She was always so pleasant and fun.  And it seemed that she and Kevin were at nearly every gathering we had; reunions, funerals, anniversaries, just everything.  Which nowadays with everyone so busy is quite the thing.  She will be sorely missed.  And now the Three Marys are down to two.  Someone needs to name a baby Mary just to get us back to three.

What to pick from?

Sat., March 1, 2003 - Talked to Greta. Lydia Witte died last week.  Ruby Ritze's granddaughter had triplets -- a boy and identical girl twins.  On TV watched "Milestones and Memories" of Lawrence Welk shows.  Very very interesting.

Sun., March 2, 2003 - Nancy came at noon and brought pizza. The same Sunday routine.  We played several games of Rummikub.

Mon., March 3, 2003 - Played cards in the evening.  Delores served pumpkin pie.

For only three, somewhat short entries, I have several things to talk about.

I don't know which Ritze granddaughter that is, but regardless, I wonder what the medical odds are of triplets that include identical twins.

I could comment on memories of my own of watching Lawrence Welk.  For instance I, or Grandma, recorded on a tape recorder (nothing so much as a VCR then) an episode or two and I remember listening and re-listening to one of them.  I'm not sure what the theme of the show was but two of the songs were Edelweiss and Loch Lomond.  Which then leads me to remember how when tape recorders were new, we'd turn one on and secretly record family conversations, usually over a meal.  I suppose people nowadays would consider that low-tech and likely not fun, but I recall we did get a bang out of listening to some of those afterwards. And there is still the classic, and long lost, recording of, at a minimum Aunt Irene and Aunt Helen, in the car somewhere and lost.  I can't recall a single word of it but do remember it was hysterical to listen to as they tried to figure out where they were.

And on a slow day, I could also research and/or comment on pumpkin pie, a real favorite of mine and of Mitch's.  I tell people we can't leave him alone in a room with one.  Perhaps not so much now that he's grown, but definitely when he was growing up.

Lastly, and unrelated to Grandma's entries, I'd like to mention that yesterday was my 60th birthday.  Rather a non-event given the current Covid restrictions. I had hoped to rent out the Joyo Theatre on Sunday and have a showing of a movie, open to family that wanted to come.  I thought having the theater to ourselves would be okay since we could all spread out. But since I had been exposed recently and new cases are through the roof, I thought it wise not to do it at all.  And normally I would bring treats to work, but out of 20 or so of us, I think 6 were here.  I didn't know that the night before but I was strangely unmotivated to make anything.  Kinda glad I didn't since I would have had extras to bring home and no one wants to be tempted with that.  It was such a non-event that around 10 p.m. I finally reminded John what day it was since he had not yet mentioned it.  But, the highlight of the day was Anna dropping by my office with a gift from her and Dakota and Mitch -- a Cricut machine.  Something I had been secretly interested in but had not thought to buy for myself.  So, good call on the kids' part.  The gift was really nice, of course, but the best part was having a little unexpected visit with Anna.

Robbers Cave in 2021

Mon., February 17, 2003 - Played cards in Party Room this evening.  Delores was sick -- others all there.

Tues., February 18, 2003 - Zoya took me to have my hairdo.  Then we went to an oriental restaurant, Thai House.  I had seafood soup, very good and many different kinds of seafood.

Wed., February 19 2003 - Went to Book Club in evening.  Weather has been nice.

I can't think of anything to say about Grandma's adventures in 2003, so I'll mention that Mom, Nancy, Anna and I went to Robbers Cave in Lincoln last month.  It was really interesting and really fun.  I can't believe I've lived in and around Lincoln for so many years and had never been there before.  But, now that's something off the list of things to do.  I highly recommend the cave tour and the facilities for a party or some such.  Really nice.

Oh, my goodness -- it has been a long time

So much going on, so little attention to this blog.  But here I am again.  For how many days in a row, or something close to resembling "in a row", who is to say?

Fri., February 14, 2003 - Saw a movie this evening, a tribute to Big Bands -- those taken from Lawrence Welk's shows.  Rained in p.m. and evening.

Sat., February 15, 2003 - Started to snow during the night.  Snowed almost all day.  Talked to Greta at noon.  They had snow, too.  Played cards in p.m. -- the group that plays on Mon. night.

Sun., February 16, 2003 - Nancy came at noon.  She made me a new kind of cheese & potato soup.  Very tasty.  Mitch & Anna here while Mary wen to Writers Group.  We played cards.  I popped some popcorn for them.

I'm having trouble reading Grandma's writing re the big band show, but I'll go with what I have there.

Of course, I cannot let dear Jenny's passing from this world to the next go unmentioned.  I should have posted something much closer to the event.  It wasn't for lack of caring about her, but just me being the usual me and not getting things done when I should do them.

However, since some time has passed it is much easier to say now how very happy I am for Jenny that her suffering is over, and for both she and Bill to be together.  The Lord works in mysterious ways.  I will always miss the two of them and particularly their laughs; both very different, but both very genuine and fun.  Bill and Jenny have left behind a beautiful legacy of lives well lived.  Their sons and grandchildren are testament to the lovely people they were.

Dual-purpose post

Sat., February 8, 2003 - Talked to Greta in late p.m.  No juicy gossip!

Sun., February 9, 2003 - Nancy brought a chicken dinner from Popeye's.  She helped rearrange some shelves in hall area. Couldn't stay long -- Jeff was coming for some legal matter.

Mon., February 10, 2003 - Played cards in evening.  Nine players there -  Helen Donaldson, Dolores Ulrich, Grace Ryan, Ethel Sovereign, Wayne Baldwin, Sam Eaton, Bob Burdick, John Ross, and myself.

Interesting that Grandma felt a need to name the card players.  Maybe that was an exceptionally big group.  Or, she wanted to fill some space.

I've delayed this post for reasons soon to be made obvious.  First, I will note that today is Grandma and Grandpa's wedding anniversary.  I hope it was as lovely a day then as we are having now.

And the reason for delaying (not that I don't go long between posts anyway) is still the shock and sadness of losing Bill.  There are no guarantees in this life, but I for one was sure we would have him for another 10 years at least.  He was otherwise so healthy and vigorous and until recently, very much his usual jovial and lovable self.  We will miss him terribly.  It was very humbling to see the crowd that came from near and far to attend his funeral.  And Jayson did such a good job speaking under such sad circumstances.

Not chopped liver, I hope

Fri., January 24, 2003 - Today is Myrtle's 95 birthday, they're having a card shower for her.  This evening to movies in library.  Saw the 1st episode of "Gunsmoke" and the 1st episode of "Rawhide."  Received candy from Helen -- the delicious "turtles" for my birthday.

Sat., January 25, 2003 - Called Greta - gave her a list of things to bring next Sunday -- dried beef, etc.  Called Helen to thank her for the candy.

Sun., January 26, 2003 - Nancy worked yesterday so Mary came.  She & the kids came about 6:00.  I showered & Mary vacuumed.  I made 2 pans of sticky rolls - gave one to Mary.  Delores came in evening - found out she had known Rick's grandmother, Ruby!

Well, Grandma mentioned it was Aunt Myrtle's birthday on the 24th, but not that it was also mine.  But, I'm thinking that's because it was a big one for Aunt Myrtle -- ending in a "5" or "0" counts as a big one.  Heck, anything past 90 is pretty big news in my opinion.  So, I'm not offended.

I'm pretty sure I haven't seen the first episode of Gunsmoke, but I sure watched plenty episodes at Grandma's after school back in the day with Grandma Anna.  We must have watched a good amount of television in the summer, too, because I remember lots of game shows, Perry Mason, and The Rifleman.  But no soap operas.

The photo is obviously not from the first season, but I picked an image from the show that I remember.  I remember portions of one episode rather vividly.  Some bad guys had some good guys held hostage and were making them go about their regular daily business to avoid anyone knowing something was wrong.  One thing that happened was one hostage had to go out and put the flag up on the flagpole like he did every day.  Not too long after, the Gunsmoke crew came and took out the bad guys and rescued all the good guys.  I think Festus may have been one of the hostages.  The thing that got them rescued was that the guy putting up the flag did so with it upside down -- a signal of distress.  The bad guys obviously didn't notice.  I was really impressed that the guy took such a big change.  It was also the first time I learned that the flag could be used that way.  Information, thankfully, that I have not had to use.

Three straight days of playing

Sat., January 18, 2003 - Played lazy all day.  Watched Lawrence Welk & Guy Lombardo in the evening.  Talked to Greta.

Sun., January 19, 2003 - Nancy came.  She sopped at Boston Market for our dinner.  We played Rummikub.

Mon., January 20 ,2003 - Played cards this evening.

It took me a second to notice that Grandma used a form of the word "play" for three days in a row.  Good for her, especially the playing lazy part.

The photos are of my dining room just this week.  Grandma's buffet had been in our bedroom holding up the television in there, but we did some switching out of furniture in the bedroom and it occurred to me that we could put the buffet to better use.  So, the corner cabinet that had been Jane's (John's mother) and had been, well, in the corner, went to Tasha who very much liked having her grandmother's cabinet, and the buffet was put in its current spot.

Right now it holds some of Grandma Anna's china and for the life of me, I don't remember even one thing that Grandma (Marian, that is) kept on her buffet.  Excuse the wrinkles in the dresser scarf there; I put it on quickly to see if I liked it and then promptly forgot to go iron it and put it back. Also, the mirror is streaky.  Egads.  I should have just started over with a new photo.

I bet they were funny

Thurs., January 9, 2003 - Made hamburger soup for supper.  Tom here for the usual - laundry, etc.

Fri., January 10, 2003 - This evening saw a VCR of Victor Borge and one of Ray Stevens singing.  Both funny.

Sat., January 11, 2003 - Talked to Greta - nothing exciting happening in Winside.  Maryan C. brought me some upside down pineapple cake - real tasty.  She stayed & talked for a time.

Ah, Victor Borge.  I wish I had a dime for every time I've laughed at his work.  Such a great talent.  I don't know who remembers, but he and Grandpa died on the same day.  Not just the same day on the calendar, but both on December 23, 2000.

Here's a little from wikipedia:

Victor Borge was born Børge Rosenbaum on 3 January 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark, into an Ashkenazi Jewish family. His parents, Bernhard and Frederikke (née Lichtinger) Rosenbaum, were both musicians: his father a violist in the Royal Danish Orchestra, and his mother a pianist.  Borge began piano lessons at the age of two, and it was soon apparent that he was a prodigy. He gave his first piano recital when he was eight years old, and in 1918 (age 9) was awarded a full scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

Borge played his first major concert in 1926 at the Danish Odd Fellow Palæet (The Odd Fellow's Lodge building) concert hall. After a few years as a classical concert pianist, he started his now famous "stand-up" act, with the signature blend of piano music and jokes. Borge started touring extensively in Europe, where he began telling anti-Nazi jokes.

When the German armed forces occupied Denmark on 9 April 1940, during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden and managed to escape to Finland.  He travelled to America on the United States Army transport American Legion, the last neutral ship to make it out of Petsamo, Finland, and arrived 28 August 1940, with only $20 (about $365 today), with $3 going to the customs fee. Disguised as a sailor, Borge returned to Denmark once during the occupation to visit his dying mother.

Even though Borge did not speak a word of English upon arrival, he quickly managed to adapt his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies. He took the name of Victor Borge, and in 1941, he started on Rudy Vallee's radio show. He was hired soon after by Bing Crosby for his Kraft Music Hall program.

Borge quickly rose to fame, winning Best New Radio Performer of the Year in 1942. Soon after the award, he was offered film roles with stars such as Frank Sinatra (in Higher and Higher). While hosting The Victor Borge Show on NBC beginning in 1946, he developed many of his trademarks, including repeatedly announcing his intent to play a piece but getting "distracted" by something or other, making comments about the audience, or discussing the usefulness of Chopin's "Minute Waltz" as an egg timer. He would also start out with some well-known classical piece like Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and suddenly move into a harmonically similar pop or jazz tune, such as Cole Porter's "Night and Day" or "Happy Birthday to You."

Borge appeared on Toast of the Town hosted by Ed Sullivan several times during 1948. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States the same year. He started the Comedy in Music show at John Golden Theatre in New York City on 2 October 1953. Comedy in Music became the longest running one-man show in the history of theater with 849 performances when it closed on 21 January 1956, a feat which placed it in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Continuing his success with tours and shows, Borge played with and conducted orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and London Philharmonic. Always modest, he felt honored when he was invited to conduct the Royal Danish Orchestra at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1992.

His later television appearances included his "Phonetic Punctuation" routine on The Electric Company in a filmed sketch. He would also use this sketch on The Electric Company's LP record to follow, during its "Punctuation" song. In addition, he appeared several times on Sesame Street, and he was a guest star during the fourth season of The Muppet Show.

Victor Borge continued to tour until his last days, performing up to 60 times per year when he was 90 years old.

Borge made several appearances on the TV show What's My Line?, both as a celebrity panelist, and as a contestant with the occupation "poultry farmer" (the latter was not a comedy routine; as a business venture, Borge raised and popularized Rock Cornish game hens starting in the 1950s).

Borge helped start several trust funds, including the Thanks to Scandinavia Fund, which was started in dedication to those who helped the Jews escape the German persecution during the war.

Aside from his musical work, Borge wrote three books, My Favorite Intermissions and My Favorite Comedies in Music (both with Robert Sherman), and the autobiography Smilet er den korteste afstand ("The Smile is the Shortest Distance") with Niels-Jørgen Kaiser.

On 23 December 2000, Borge died in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 91, after 75 years of entertaining. He died peacefully in his sleep a day after returning from a concert in Denmark. "It was just his time to go," Frederikke Borge said. "He's been missing my mother terribly." (His wife had died only three months earlier.)

Per Borge's wishes, his connection to both the United States and Denmark was marked by having part of his ashes interred at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, with a replica of the iconic Danish statue The Little Mermaid sitting on a large rock at the grave site, and the other part in Western Jewish Cemetery (Mosaisk Vestre Begravelsesplads), Copenhagen.

And I'll just leave that right there.  (No disrespect to the very funny guy, Ray Stevens but I had to go with something about Victor.)

Christmas, over and done

Fri., January 3, 2003 - Mary took me for hairdo & brought me home.  Delores was sick.

Sat., January 4, 2003 - Dale & Mitch came & took my old recliner to Mary's garage.  It will be sold at auction in the spring.  Jean Hansen called in p.m.  I called Greta in late afternoon.

Sun., January 5, 2003 - Nancy came & I fixed dinner.  She boxed up the Christmas decorations.  Mitch & Anna came while Mary attended the writing group.  They helped Nancy take decorations to the basement.  Delores came in evening to play Rummikub.  Ray called in p.m.

Speaking of Christmas, Micki wrote the nicest post on Facebook about her memories of Grandma, well specifically her wonderful cream puffs.  A very nice post with some lovely things to say.

I won't post the whole thing, but here is part of it and the photo she attached.

My apologies

Sat., December 28, 2002 - Greta called.  Nancy came in p.m. with groceries.  I showered.
Sun., December 29, 2002 - Nancy & I left in time so we attended church in Wahoo.  The family gathered at Bill's for our Christmas get-together.  Merilyn couldn't come.  Had a wonderful dinner -- had gift exchange.  Went to see Jayson & Lora's new house.  Will be real nice.  Lovely day -- pretty ride home with all the Xmas lights.
Mon., December 30, 2002 - Annabelle called.  She was in Lincoln but didn't care to drive in Lincoln.  Had a very nice visit with her.  Played cards again this evening.

Life has been a bit crazy for me and so I have been even more negligent in creating posts.  But, each one is one more done, so no harm really.

The coronavirus is making life interesting and difficult for a lot of people, but not so much for me at the moment.  Hoping this situation is resolved soon and things get back to normal.  Brought the dogs in last night and they did very well for outside dogs.  There wasn't too much fighting for the privilege of sitting close to me once the initial excitement wore off.

Watching movies

Wed., December 25, 2002 - Nancy & I went to Dale's.  We ate about 2:00.  Lynn's brother Rod & family were there -- Mary, Mitch & Anna were there, too.  Nancy called Greta before we went to Dale's -- had a nice visit.  We went home about 4:30.  I watched some movies in the evening.
Thurs., December 26, 2002 - Myrtle called about 10:30.  Tom forgot it was Thurs. -- came late.  Usual things accomplished -- laundry, etc.
Fri., December 27, 2002 - Dolores took me to have my hair-do.  Mary brought me home.

For some reason, the fact that Grandma would watch movies at all hours of the day and night, even into the wee hours, tickled me.  I'm glad she enjoyed them.  I know we discussed movies every now and then.  We might even on December 27 when I took her home from her hair-do since she usually fed me lunch on those days.

For no reason other than I like it lots, here's a photo of Kyleah and Willa and Mom.

Christmas lights

Thurs., December 19, 2002 - Baked pumpkin cranberry bread.  Tom came in evening for usual routine.  He brought barbecued ribs from Famous Dave's.
Fri., December 20, 2002 - Saw "White Christmas" this evening in the library.  I took my bells to show.
Sat., December 21, 2002 - In a.m. Nancy took me to get my new glasses.  We ate dinner at Popeyes.  In evening she picked up Mitch & Anna & took us around the city to see the Christmas lights.  Talked to Greta in p.am.

As I recall, the driving around to look at lights took place more than once.  And maybe one time they took the city bus -- not positive on that, though.

Photo found on Google.

My arms still hurt

Fri., December 13, 2002 - Home Nurse came in p.m.  I boiled the syrup, etc. for peppernuts.  Mary & kids came in evening.  They finished mixing the peppernuts.
Sat., December 14, 2002 - Greta called.  I baked 4 loaves of pumpkin cranberry bread.
Sun., December 15, 2002 - Dolores, Nancy & I went to Capitol City Christian Church for a Christmas musical.  It was "super" -- about 157 adults & children presented it.

I also remember this particular time frame.  Every time I thought the spoon and my arm would surely break, Grandma took a peek and said we needed even more flour for the peppernuts.  I'm not complaining -- the end result is always well worth it.

I did make some peppernuts this year myself.  However, it was a very different version.  For one, it didn't make nearly so many and it was more like a shortbread than what we think of peppernuts.  The recipe was on a Danish facebook page I follow, from someone's Danish grandmother.  So, just like chili or pizza, there are lots of different versions.  And they are called pebernoder.  :-)  (Photo from Google).

I also remember Grandma's pumpkin cranberry bread.  Yummy!

Gearing up for Christmas

Sat., December 7, 2002 - Finished addressing most of my Christmas cards.  Talked to Greta in p.m.  Mary brought meat of 2 wild ducks & 1 wild goose.  Friends of hers hunt but don't care for the meat.  They skin the birds & then cut off the meat.  I soaked the meat in cold water.
Sun., December 8, 2002 - Nancy came at noon & brought KFC - I had potatoes & fried apples ready.  I showered & she did some cleaning.  Mitch & Anna here while Mary went to a meeting at Zoya's.  We played UNO.
Mon., December 9, 2002 - Mailed 11 Xmas cards.  Played cards tonight.  Dolores came (I baked 4 loaves of pumpkin bread) here afterward & we played Rummikub.

Now I do remember getting the duck and goose meat from my former co-worker.  I do not recall specifically giving it to Grandma, but I obviously did.  Half of a memory is better than none at all, right?

For no reason whatsoever, here's a recipe.  :-)

Done and done

Tues., November 19, 2002 - Nancy here at 7:30.  We thought the surgery was to be in the morning but it was changed to afternoon.  Mary came & we told her to come back after lunch.  The nurses took me to the "room" about 12:30.  Mary came back a little after 11:00 and Dale also came.  Back in my room about 3:00.  All went well.  Tom came in the evening.
Wed., November 20, 2002 - Bill's birthday.  Nancy stopped in the morning before work.  Lora took me home from the hospital.
Thurs., November 21, 2002 - A home nurse came in a.m.  Zoya brought telephones so I could pick one out I wanted to use.  Lora brought a scale.  I was told to weigh myself every day-- since I had no scale she brought one -- my Xmas present from the Wahoo Iversens.  Nancy came in evening -- brought potato soup -- did the laundry.

It still amazes me that one can be opened up for a fairly involved surgery in the afternoon and then go home the next day.  It's good in most cases I'm sure, but still impressive and slightly unnerving in my opinion.

How nice that even with everything going on, the first thing Grandma mentioned on the 20th was that it was Bill's birthday.  Seems fitting to find a photo of the three kids that were mentioned in these entries.  (And look, Tom's smiling!)  Surely Mom called at some point there to find out things were going?  Maybe she talked to someone other than Grandma.

Poor parenting?

Sat., November 16, 2002 - Dale came to see me at 8:00 a.m.  Mitch & Anna came in the morning also.  Tom & Mary came in early afternoon and Nancy came after the football game was over.  She stopped at my place & picked up some things I needed.  Tom, Anna, Mitch & Nancy ate at the cafeteria.  Everybody left by 7:30.
Sunday, November 17, 2002 - Mary & the kids came after early church.  Greta came about 10:00.  Dale here too in the morning.  Tom was here from about 10:30 to 12:45.  Greta, Mary, Mitch, Anna & Nancy ate in the cafeteria.  Bill, Jenny & Patty came in mid-afternoon.  Nancy left about 8:00.  Every day blood was taken for testing.  I evidently had a heart attack several weeks ago.  I'm also hooked up to a heart monitor.  Had an IV one day.
Monday, November 18, 2002 - Nancy came at 6:30 & Dale at about 8:00.  Talked to all 3 doctors & will get a pacemaker on Tuesday.  Nancy called Greta, Tom, Bill, Mary and Ray.  More x-rays were taken.  Mary here at noon.  Dale, Dane & Kyleah here about 5:00 p.m.  Mary & kids here at 6:00 & Tom here at 7:00.

Good heavens.  Did I just drop my kids off on a Saturday morning and go on my way?  Mitch would have been 11 and able to locate a hospital room on his own with Anna in tow, but still.  Hopefully at the very least I had something important to do and came up to say hi and then left.  Egads.

For no particular reason, here is a fun photo of Grandpa and Tom.  I sure miss that place.

Not feeling well

Sat., November 9, 2002 - Talked to Greta.
Sun., November 10, 2002 - Nancy here for usual Sunday activities.
Mon., November 11, 2002 - Cards in evening.
Tues., November 12, 2002 -

I've read ahead a little bit, but even without doing so I may have suspected that Grandma wasn't feeling well during this stretch.  Short entries and even one day with nothing, which was unusual for her.  Stay tuned.

For no particular reason, here's a photo of my baby guineas shortly after I first bought them.  They are much bigger now but not yet ready to go out into the big wide world to eat bugs.  They need to stay in the coop a bit longer before they get to do that.

Boo Notre Dame

Sat., November 2, 2002 - Talked to Greta in afternoon.  Nancy called after the football game.  Was disappointed that Nebraska lost but elated that Notre Dame was defeated by an un-ranked team from the East.
Sun., November 3, 2002 - Nancy came about 10:30.  We went to the Village Inn for brunch.  Then grocery shopping & then to my apartment.  Nancy washed my sweater & double knit dresses.  I showered & we played a few games of Rummikub.  A most enjoyable day.
Mon., November 4, 2002 - I played cards in evening -- won 1 game.  Dolores treated with cake & coffee.  She said the cake was for Wayne's birthday which was Sat. but it was also for her birthday which is tomorrow.

I have no logical reason for it, but I like it when Notre Dame loses also.

I did a double-take when I read Grandma talking about Wayne.  Obviously, it wasn't Nancy's Wayne but still . . .

For no particular reason, here's a photo of a tree I planted several years ago.  It was a fuzzy stick about my height at that time.

An Affair to Remember

Wed., October 30, 2002 - Attended Book Club this evening.  Greta called Nancy & Nancy called me that Marie Parker died today.
Thurs., October 31, 2002 - I called Myrtle this morning. Annabelle called to tell me about Marie.  The funeral will be Saturday but I'm not up to traveling that far.  Tom came for supper, laundry & my shower.  Mary & the kid came for Trick or Treat.  (Mitch didn't go for Trick etc.  He stayed home & passed out goodies to those who came.)  Anna was a Jack in the Box.  Very clever costume.
Fri., November 1, 2002 - This evening saw the movie "An Affair to Remember".  Good show.

Oh, yes.  An Affair to Remember.  So lovely, so tragic, so enjoyable to watch.

This last weekend, there was a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Bill and Jenny at the care facility where she lives.  Such a nice turnout and I am so glad the decision was made to mark the occasion.  Jenny wasn't able to enjoy it as we all wish she would have been, but maybe she felt the happiness and love in the room.  It would be great if I had a photo of the wedding to post, but I don't so a movie poster will have to do.
