Penny candy and mice

Sun., November 17, 1935 - Loretta and Verna Hoffman here this a.m.  Loretta tried on her dress.  Mom went to church.  I stayed home to get dinner.  This was Ray's Sunday to work.
Mon., November 18, 1935 - Today was Herbert Niemann's birthday.  He treated us to penny candy bars.
Tues., November 19, 1935 - Set my 3 mouse traps with flour last nite and had 3 dead mice this morning.  I took the invitation to Irene after school for the Thanksgiving party we're going to give the South school Nov. 29.  Mom and Ray and Granddad went to Cliff & Marie's to get our Thanksgiving goose.

Maybe I need to try flour.  I am trying to catch a mouse that is consuming goat feed out in a shed.  I tried peanut butter and after two days, nothing.  Maybe the mousey is too full of feed.  Or, maybe he's no more. I had to leave the door open for a couple of days after forcing it open from being frozen shut.  Maybe the cats dispatched him during that time.

Dreary weather?

Thur., November 14, 1935 - No one here tonite so I got some studying done for a change.
Fri., November 15, 1935 - Went to card club at Mann's tonite.
Sat., November 16, 1935 - Usual Saturday work.  Howard was up here tonite.

Grandma was certainly not her usual informative self for these three days.  There are several possible reasons, I suppose.  For instance, maybe there was really nothing going on to talk about, or she was bummed out by a stretch of dreary weather, or she got behind and when she went to put something down she didn't remember any details.  If it were me, it would very likely be the last scenario.  I had to ask Mitch about something that happened while he was here last month.  Thankfully his memory is better than mine, so I can rest easy that my journal is reasonably correct for that particular day, should anyone in the year 2099 read my journal and feel the need to comment.

Speaking of Mitch and of Anna's recent graduation in my last post, here is a photo of Mitch around the time of his high school graduation.  He looks rather happy.

As I was saying . . .

Mon., November 11, 1935 - A tire was flat this morning when I stopped in front of the schoolhouse.  The boys fixed it at recess.  Earl back in school after 3 weeks absence.  Mom and I teased Ray tonite when he was reading!
Tues., November 12, 1935 - Mrs. Wolf brought some patterns for lace collars tonite.  Mrs. Lindbergh was here to try on her dress.
Wed., November 13, 1935 - Howard stopped at the schoolhouse awhile this evening.  He had a thorn in his wrist, infection set in, the place was lanced last nite.  Mrs. Trautwein brought Grandmother some flowers.  Miss Nuss and Ethel were here awhile tonite.

Well, I made it just under a month since my last post.  Time certainly got away with an early family Christmas, Anna graduating from college, Mitch visiting, John having surgery, momma goats having baby goats with one rejecting a baby . . . what else am I missing?

I am glad Grandma seems to be having a quieter time of it in 1935, flat tire and all.

There's a photo of my little graduate at the recognition on East Campus the day before the big graduation ceremony.
