Hair-do

Mon., January 27, 2003 - Slept late this morning.  Went to Membership meeting in lobby in the evening.  After the meeting & lunch I stopped at Dolores & played Rummikub.

Tues., January 28, 2003 - Took the Handi-Van to get my hair-do and Mary brought me home.  Called Lila & Wilva this afternoon -- easier than writing a letter.  The Monday night card playing group played tonite -- 8 players.

Wed., January 29, 2003 - Made tapioca pudding with plum juice I had stashed in the freezer.  Book Club in evening.

I think Grandma wrote Wilva in that one entry.  On these particular days, her handwriting is a bit small and wobbly.  I sure did like going along to Wilva's when Grandma had her hair appointments in Winside.  I thought her shop was a fun place to hang out and she was always so nice and friendly to a little kid.

Tilling and quilting

"April 23, 1995:  Greta took me to Werner Mann's 50th anniversary celebration at the auditorium.
April 24, 1995:  Arlene R. came with a quilt to be bound.  We basted around the outside of it.
April 27, 1995:  John took Howard to Norfolk and Howard bought a new Huskee tiller.  He had been using Lila H.'s since she moved to town.  Now that Jim is out of the service, he needs it.  $529.00 + $31.74 tax = $560.74.

Well, the quilt is one of Arlene's but the date on the back says 1993, so I'm close but with no cigar.  It is a lovely quilt, me thinks.

I still like how Grandma recorded the cost of things Grandpa bought or needed, but not so much her quilting supplies.  There were doubtful good, solid reasons for that but I still like to smile about it.

Same song, second verse

"January 4, 1995:  -10 degrees this morning.  Mick T. and Lila H. came this evening to audit the church books.
January 5, 1995:  Still cold.  Howard took me to Wilva's to have hair washed, etc.
January 6, 1995:  Cold and windy -- no Pinochle Club today.
January 7, 1995:  -10 degrees this morning.
January 8, 1995:  Still cold."

In the last post I said I liked reading about the Huskers beating Miami.  For this post, I will state unequivocally that I don't like reading about -10 degree temps.  Brrr!

Appropriately, here's a photo of Grandpa with the bird bath and heater making sure the birds don't suffer when it's so cold.  I wonder if it was good enough for -10 degrees . . .

Knitting?

"November 13, 1994:  The entire family plus Helen, John and Dorothy Jo there at Greta and Lester's for their 25th anniversary.  The family went together and gave them a bread maker.  We gave them the Storm at Sea quilt.
November 14, 1994:  Beverly N. took me to Legion Auxiliary meeting -- Lila brought me home.
November 15, 1994:  Mailed knitted doily to Marina and Raymond -- anniversary present."

Knitted doily??  What's up with that?  I would bet the farm and all my critters that Grandma did not knit.  I don't think Grandma Anna knitted.  I lived my entire childhood thinking we were crochet people, period.  Maybe Grandma had one from the Iversen side that she was given or something.  But other than that, I'm stumped.  I can't see her going out and buying one, but I suppose that is a possibility, too.  I have an anti-knit bias and would like to see this settled.  Mom?  Nancy?  Jim?

I think I am caught up now with this being Tuesday and this also being a post for Tuesday.

Here's Grandma Anna contemplating, I am sure, the inferiority of knitting.  I love the doodad in her hair.

Eagle Scout

"October 30, 1994:  Helen, Dorothy Jo, Greta, Howard and I went to Wahoo.  Left at 8:30.  We had dinner at Bill's and then to church by 2:00 for the Eagle Court of Honor for Jayme.  After the program a reception in the basement and then to Bill's to visit -- Dale's, Tom, Merilyn, Nancy, Rick and Mitch were there.  Mary wasn't feeling too good.  Jayson and Lora there, too.
October 31, 1994:  Lois K., Arlene R., Lila and I finished quilting Greta's quilt in p.m.  Nice evening.  Had about 20 - 25 tricksters."

I remember missing this particular event, and I know now probably why I did -- morning sickness which sometimes lasted more than just the morning.  Little Anna was on the way.  I am not sure if we knew that at the time but I know I was sometimes sick in the early going.

It would be appropriate here to have a photo of Jayme as an Eagle Scout, or perhaps Anna as a little baby, but since I have neither of those ready to go (and our scanner conked out), here's a hybrid-ish photo of Jayme as a baby.  Interestingly, it looks like he's holding a red Solo cup.  Hmmmmm.  Must have been quite the Christmas party.

No eating out

"October 13, 1994:  Cloudy and dampish.  TOPS met in evening.
October 14, 1994:  Pinochle at Ida F.'s.
October 15 and 16, 1994:  Put the border on Greta's Storm at Sea quilt.
October 17, 1994:  Arlene R. and Lois K. put quilt in frame.  Lois, Arlene R., Lila and I quilted in p.m."

No slam against the TOPS ladies, but this is I believe one of very few, if not the only mention of a meeting that didn't include going out to eat.  Of course, since Grandma didn't journal each and every day, maybe ordinary meetings didn't rise to the level of being recorded.  I think I'll go with that.  I remember that when Grandma was first with TOPS and doing quite well, she told us she went to bed early one night so she wouldn't be tempted to eat any cookies.  That made me smile then and still does.  And that was back when Nancy lived down by Plymouth -- it's been awhile.

I've been somewhat distracted with the election coverage today and nearly forgot about this little blog here.  But I didn't forget entirely.

Speaking of Nancy and Plymouth, I had to drag out this decidedly humorous photo.  I want to say this was when she and Jim lived outside Laurel, but it is closer in time to them living in Plymouth than anything else I can come up with.  For some reason I am really liking Grandpa's glasses.  And his arms look the color I most remember them.

Childhood names carry on

"January 2, 1994:  Wacker farm building burned down -- a complete loss.  Greta took Lester to hospital -- has a sort of infection in his left leg.
January 6, 1994:  Cold and windy -- wind chill of - 40 degrees.  Mickie T. and Lila H. here in evening to audit church books.
January 7, 1994:  I had Bonnie F. play Pinochle for me at Arlene R.'s.  She entertained for the play off party."

I wonder how many people still call Mick Topp, Mickie.  There can't be that many other than family but it makes me smile that Grandma did.  Of course, Ann Behmer always called Tom Tommy, I am pretty sure.  (That looks funny....the comma with Mick/Mickie looks odd, but not using on for Tom/Tommy is equally odd.  I guess there is no winning on that score.  I should have just re-worded my sentences.)

Is the Wacker building the one that had the cat inside that Mom walked by and "petted" through the window every day?  If so, I wonder if it perished in the fire.

How nice to have a comment from Jim Hansen on yesterday's post.  And how ironic that his mom's name popped up today.  Obviously, I did not know Lila like Mom and Grandma and Grandpa did, but I did find her delightful.  And Grandpa really, really enjoyed her company and making her laugh.  Thank you Jim for commenting and even reading this blog since it is quite one-family-centered.  I'll have to make an effort to be a bit more worldly, or rather more Winside-ly in the future.  Welcome aboard!  Somewhere we have photos of your boys in Grandpa's garden.  Will have to see if I (translation = Mom) can find those.

Instead in my new effort to be more Winside-ly, here is a photo of . . . Winside.  Can't see Wacker's building; it would be too far away even if it was built when this photo was taken.

Sunday recipe and church

"February 15, 1990:  Snow.
February 16, 1990:  No Pinochle Club.
February 18, 1990:  The LCW had charge of church since pastors were on vacation.  Dorothy Jo, Lila and I had charge -- I read the sermon.  Greta and I went shopping in Norfolk in p.m."

Anna copied the recipe for me a long time ago, back when she didn't know how to spell 'chocolate'.  I don't know what the rectangle drawing is -- maybe it's a Rice Krispie bar.  No directions, but I guess just melt and stir and spread over cooled bars.  I don't know why I don't make this more often.  It's tasty!

I can believe Grandma did the sermon at church that Sunday.  Not that others couldn't or wouldn't, but she had a good measured voice for reading and wasn't shy about it.  Or didn't act like she was anyway.  Dale's senior class had her as their commencement speaker in 1977.  Somewhere I have a cassette tape of Grandma practicing.  I don't remember what her speech was all about, but I remember being there and being proud that they chose her for that special occasion.
