New names and sad news

Sat., March 21, 1936 - My rheumatism worse today than it's ever been.  Alma came down to see me this a.m.  This p.m. Henry Kahlers from Osmond, Mrs. Henry Schnellbecker, two Mrs. Busses, and Emil Kahler, all Kahler cousins of Mom's from Kansas were here.  They had been to a Dr. in Dakota and were on way home.  Irene & Helen took me to Lewis for another treatment.  Not going back until less pain.
Sun., March 22, 1936 - Didn't feel much better.  Ray came home in the forenoon.  Mom started putting hot epsom salt packs on my hip.  Drove out to Oscar Mann's about 5:00 to see if it would be all right if I didn't teach Mon. & Tues. so my hip would get better.  He said it was O.K.  We drove around and told Goodlings, Wackers, Davis & Fischers.  Howard here tonite.
Mon., March 23, 1936 - Mom continued her steam treatments.  Annabelle was here a little before school this morning.  Howard was here a few minutes tonite to see [me?].  Am going to try sleeping in a bed tonite after spending the last 2 nites in Grussfather's big chair.

I may have to crank up the genealogy research; those Kahler cousin names are brand-new to me.

I learned over this weekend that Marvin Andersen died.  Granted, he lived a good, long 90+ years, but this is still sad news to me,  There are obvious reasons, but one of them is you rarely see someone so happy and joyful that had such good cause to be mad at the world and to be bitter about what life had dished out.  While I am sure his family will miss him dearly, one can't help but think about the happy reunions he is having in heaven.  Especially with the sweetheart in the photograph above.

2015 goings on

September 29, 1932 - My "Wayne County Teacher" came and says that Institute is next Monday and Tuesday.  I played ball this noon.  Talked to Mayme tonite.
September 30, 1932 - Mom came after me about 5 o'clock.  We went over to Behmer's a few minutes to see about having the school furnace fixed.  Annie and Ola and kids were in this evening for watermelon.  Claus, Pete and Clara were here a few minutes, too.
October 1, 1932 - Mom, Ray and I went to Norfolk this morning.  I got some school prizes.  I went with Ray to the barn dance at Carr's tonite.  Had such a good time that I want to go next Saturday.

I am guessing Institute is what we called teachers' convention (I think that is what we called it in my day anyway . . . my day is 35 years ago now).  I do remember we got out of school for a few days and that was what mattered.

This last weekend was the Nielsen-Iversen family reunion.  We didn't make it up for the Friday night weenie roast and fireworks, but went to the gathering on Saturday at the Legion Hall in Winside.  I feel safe in saying a good time was had by all.  Dorothy Jo wished to pass along her recording secretary duties and gave them to Mom, who wasted no time in passing them to me.  I suppose I should find out what all is involved so that I do not drop the ball somewhere along the way.  I did a very quick count of the sign-in sheet and counted 89 people for the Saturday lunch.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.  The next reunion, in 2018, will be Grandpa's kin's turn to be in charge.  The last I knew the weenie roast would be at our place and the Saturday meal in Wahoo.

I made a concerted effort on Saturday to talk to people other than those I see most often and did pretty well.  I had a grand time sketching out the family tree for Sabrina.  I think I managed to clear the air rather than muddy up the waters, but the family tree is a slight bit confusing for the younger ones.  I am so happy that she wanted to know who was who and what was what.

The photos are from 4th of July picnics in the past.  Thank goodness.  Some of these hairstyles and fashion statements definitely need to stay in the past. (The blog program has a limit on the characters in the label box where I name who and what is in the post -- so I couldn't get everyone tagged.)

Don't like one answer, try someone else

June 11, 2002:  Missed hair appointment.  Hot weather.
June 12, 2002:  Nothing much happened.  Attended Book Club meeting -- read an article about the history of the flag to the group.
June 13, 2002:  Called Lois -- Myrtle still in hospital -- not sure how soon she'll be home.  Called Frances C.  She's moving in with Dana and wife.  Called Myrtle after dinner -- she doesn't know when she'll be home.  Has therapy every day.  Tom came for supper.  He did the laundry.  I showered and we played Rummikub.

Did Grandma not like Lois's answer to the question as to when Aunt Myrtle was coming home?  In all reality, it may have been that Lois thought Aunt Myrtle would know more later in the day, but it reads that Grandma maybe didn't like or trust her information and wanted to go to the top.

I think I can speak for the group and say that we had a grand time at Lois's yesterday for the 4th of July gathering.  Not as large a crowd as other years, but sometimes you get to visit better with people that way.  In any event, a fine time was had by all.  And cream pies were present.

Here's a photo from a 4th from the past.  I am thinking 1999 or thereabouts, but I am not sure.  Some were there, some were absent, and some are gone from us.

What now?

"July 22 and 23, 1995:  Raymond and Marina in Lincoln.
August 3, 1995:  Raymond and Marina left for California.  In p.m., Howard and Marvin A. came to visit.
August 5, 1995:  Greta got some diabetic things for Howard.
Helen and John visited Raymond Jones during the middle of August.
August 20, 1995:  Went to Lincoln for Anna's baptism.
August 27, 1995:  Katie B. and Louise H. visited here in p.m.
March 29, 1998:  Marina died.
April 3, 1998:  Marina's funeral."

Yup, that's correct -- Grandma went from August 1995 to March 1998 in this particular journal.  I have to remember to grab something new for my next post.  I do not immediately recall a 1998 or 1999 journal, so we may very well take an even greater leap with the next journal.

Had to post a photo of the lovely Marina.  She and Uncle Raymond always seemed so very happy and infatuated with one another.  It was fun to be around them.

Cold!

"December 28, 1992:  Started to sleet in late afternoon.  So glad nothing like that happened over Christmas.  Marvin, Betty Ann, Dewey and Dorothea Jensen visited in p.m.
December 29 - 31, 1992:  Some sleet -- much colder -- on the 31st -- 8 degrees in morning - wind chill -30 degrees.  Brrr -- !
January 9, 1993:  Pinochle Club at Marie H.'s.  Arlene R. took me."

I don't even want to think of temperatures that low.  Even in the heat of August.  Yikes!  Not sure what else to add.  So, here's the other photo I have on hand of Uncle Elmer and Aunt Myrtle's place.  Other than having firecrackers blow up in my hand when I was little, I don't remember ever having a bad thought on this property.
