My arms still hurt

Fri., December 13, 2002 - Home Nurse came in p.m.  I boiled the syrup, etc. for peppernuts.  Mary & kids came in evening.  They finished mixing the peppernuts.
Sat., December 14, 2002 - Greta called.  I baked 4 loaves of pumpkin cranberry bread.
Sun., December 15, 2002 - Dolores, Nancy & I went to Capitol City Christian Church for a Christmas musical.  It was "super" -- about 157 adults & children presented it.

I also remember this particular time frame.  Every time I thought the spoon and my arm would surely break, Grandma took a peek and said we needed even more flour for the peppernuts.  I'm not complaining -- the end result is always well worth it.

I did make some peppernuts this year myself.  However, it was a very different version.  For one, it didn't make nearly so many and it was more like a shortbread than what we think of peppernuts.  The recipe was on a Danish facebook page I follow, from someone's Danish grandmother.  So, just like chili or pizza, there are lots of different versions.  And they are called pebernoder.  :-)  (Photo from Google).

I also remember Grandma's pumpkin cranberry bread.  Yummy!

I remember this concert

Tues., December 11, 2002 - Grace came at 8:30 and took me to Randolph School.  Mitch and Anna were in a recital.  Mitch played a solo role -- Star Spangled Banner.  After the program Mary took me to the hair dresser -- she also took me home again.  Lois called to find out if I'd be home Sunday -- but that's the day Dolores is taking us to a special program.
Wed., December 11, 2002 - Sent more Xmas cards.  Went to Book Club in the evening.  Mary brought me some stamps.
Thurs., December 12, 2002 - Talked to Myrtle in a.m.  Wrote some more Xmas cards.  Tom came in evening.  The usual routine supper, laundry, shower & Rummikub.

The photos aren't from the concert Grandma mentions but from the same school year, so close enough.  I do remember taking a photo of Mitch playing his solo, but I can't find it.  Good times at ol' Randolph Elementary.

Gearing up for Christmas

Sat., December 7, 2002 - Finished addressing most of my Christmas cards.  Talked to Greta in p.m.  Mary brought meat of 2 wild ducks & 1 wild goose.  Friends of hers hunt but don't care for the meat.  They skin the birds & then cut off the meat.  I soaked the meat in cold water.
Sun., December 8, 2002 - Nancy came at noon & brought KFC - I had potatoes & fried apples ready.  I showered & she did some cleaning.  Mitch & Anna here while Mary went to a meeting at Zoya's.  We played UNO.
Mon., December 9, 2002 - Mailed 11 Xmas cards.  Played cards tonight.  Dolores came (I baked 4 loaves of pumpkin bread) here afterward & we played Rummikub.

Now I do remember getting the duck and goose meat from my former co-worker.  I do not recall specifically giving it to Grandma, but I obviously did.  Half of a memory is better than none at all, right?

For no reason whatsoever, here's a recipe.  :-)

Getting back to normal

Wed., December 4, 2002 - Had Meals on Wheels today.  Nancy & I to the Lied Center tonight to see & hear The Three Irish Tenors.  Dale took us there & then came & took us home.
Thurs., December 5, 2002 - Meals on Wheels again.  Tom called in a.m. that they came home last night.  He came in evening & brought our meal -- barbecued ribs.  I showered.  We didn't play Rummikub -- Tom was to tired.  Myrtle called today.
Fri., December 6, 2002 - Meals on Wheels again.  The Home Nurse came in p.m.  Went downstairs this evening & saw "Heidi".

Ah, Heidi.  Such a fun book and movie.  I think it was one of Grandma's favorites.  I know I was young when I was first aware of it, but not sure how young, nor the when or where of it all.  I learned the following from wikipedia just now (where I also found the photo):

1.  It was written as a book "for children and those who love children" (as quoted from its subtitle).

2.  Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written and is among the best-known works of Swiss literature.

3.  Thirteen English translations were done between 1882 and 1959, by British and American translators.

4.  About 25 film or television productions of the original story have been made, from 1937 to 2017.

Short and sweet

Sun., December 1, 2002 - Nancy came & vacuumed & other tasks.  I took a shower.  Did laundry.
Mon., December 2, 2002 - New chair was delivered in p.m.  Played cards tonight.  Jim Eaton called to remind me of playing.
Tues., December 3, 2002 - Grace Ryon took me to hair dresser & came after me.  Went down to Delores' & played Rummikub.

I got nuthin'.  Here's a photo of Barney, obviously not feeling guilty about nearly wrecking the hay feeder.

The chair!

Thurs., November 28, 2002 - Thanksgiving Day.  Nancy took me to Dale's house.  Lynn had invited both sides of the family.  Had a wonderful time.
Fri., November 29, 2002 - Home nurse came again.  I can take a shower now instead of a sponge bath.
Sat., November 30, 2002 - Nancy took me shopping.  First we picked out new glasses for me.  Then to the Village Inn for dinner -- then to pick out a new recliner that lifts a person out.  Bought one at the Havelock Furniture Store.

The "teapot" chair, right?  Because it tips you over and pours you out.  I think that's the name Grandma called it, or at least I've got the spirit of the name anyway.  And unbelievably, I found a photo of it in no time at all.  And there's Maude way on the left.

Getting back to normal

Mon., November 25, 2002 - Home nurse came today.  A meeting of the membership this evening.  Pumpkin pie was served.
Tues., November 26, 2002 - Snowed most of morning.  I had to cancel my hair appointment.  Played cards (Seven Up) in evening.
Wed., November 27, 2002 - Lora came & took me to 2 Dr. appointments.  In the morning to the heart specialist & in p.m. to Dr. Semin.

Mmmm, pumpkin pie.

I quickly researched pumpkin and unfortunately, did not find anything particularly interesting or surprising.  Wikipedia did tell me this, which I found somewhat worth the mention:

"As one of the most popular crops in the United States, in 2017 over 680,000,000 kilograms (1.5 billion pounds) of pumpkins were produced.  The top pumpkin-producing states include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California.

According to the Illinois Department of Agriculture, 95% of the U.S. crop intended for processing is grown in Illinois.  NestlĂ©, operating under the brand name Libby's, produces 85% of the processed pumpkin in the United States, at their plant in Morton, Illinois. In the fall of 2009, rain in Illinois devastated the NestlĂ© crop, which combined with a relatively weak 2008 crop depleting that year's reserves resulted in a shortage affecting the entire country during the Thanksgiving holiday season.  Another shortage, somewhat less severe, affected the 2015 crop.  The pumpkin crop grown in the western United States, which constitutes approximately 3-4% of the national crop, is primarily for the organic market."

And that's all there is to that.  From me, anyway.

Pecking order

Fri., November 22, 2002 - A home nurse came again.  I had Meals on Wheels today.  I called Jean.  Mary & kids came this evening -- they brought soup.
Sat., November 23, 2002 - Tom & Merilyn left Sunday a.m. for Laughlin.  A home nurse came again.  I called Ray.  Mary brought noon meal - a beef & vegetable mixture -- very good.
Sun., November 24, 2002 - I baked a pumpkin pie.  Nancy came & ironed for me.  Tom called from Laughlin to find out how I was.  Bill, Jenny & Patty came in p.m.  We had pie for lunch.

I wonder how it is Jean got called before Uncle Ray.  Maybe she had tried to reach Grandma or something.  Her birthday was in May, so it wasn't that.

I wish I could remember more of the fun sayings Jean tossed around often.  The only one I recall is "for crying out the window."

Here's the Christensen family.  I think Uncle Pete looks rather handsome here.  Jean looks waaay to serious for how I remember her.

Done and done

Tues., November 19, 2002 - Nancy here at 7:30.  We thought the surgery was to be in the morning but it was changed to afternoon.  Mary came & we told her to come back after lunch.  The nurses took me to the "room" about 12:30.  Mary came back a little after 11:00 and Dale also came.  Back in my room about 3:00.  All went well.  Tom came in the evening.
Wed., November 20, 2002 - Bill's birthday.  Nancy stopped in the morning before work.  Lora took me home from the hospital.
Thurs., November 21, 2002 - A home nurse came in a.m.  Zoya brought telephones so I could pick one out I wanted to use.  Lora brought a scale.  I was told to weigh myself every day-- since I had no scale she brought one -- my Xmas present from the Wahoo Iversens.  Nancy came in evening -- brought potato soup -- did the laundry.

It still amazes me that one can be opened up for a fairly involved surgery in the afternoon and then go home the next day.  It's good in most cases I'm sure, but still impressive and slightly unnerving in my opinion.

How nice that even with everything going on, the first thing Grandma mentioned on the 20th was that it was Bill's birthday.  Seems fitting to find a photo of the three kids that were mentioned in these entries.  (And look, Tom's smiling!)  Surely Mom called at some point there to find out things were going?  Maybe she talked to someone other than Grandma.

Poor parenting?

Sat., November 16, 2002 - Dale came to see me at 8:00 a.m.  Mitch & Anna came in the morning also.  Tom & Mary came in early afternoon and Nancy came after the football game was over.  She stopped at my place & picked up some things I needed.  Tom, Anna, Mitch & Nancy ate at the cafeteria.  Everybody left by 7:30.
Sunday, November 17, 2002 - Mary & the kids came after early church.  Greta came about 10:00.  Dale here too in the morning.  Tom was here from about 10:30 to 12:45.  Greta, Mary, Mitch, Anna & Nancy ate in the cafeteria.  Bill, Jenny & Patty came in mid-afternoon.  Nancy left about 8:00.  Every day blood was taken for testing.  I evidently had a heart attack several weeks ago.  I'm also hooked up to a heart monitor.  Had an IV one day.
Monday, November 18, 2002 - Nancy came at 6:30 & Dale at about 8:00.  Talked to all 3 doctors & will get a pacemaker on Tuesday.  Nancy called Greta, Tom, Bill, Mary and Ray.  More x-rays were taken.  Mary here at noon.  Dale, Dane & Kyleah here about 5:00 p.m.  Mary & kids here at 6:00 & Tom here at 7:00.

Good heavens.  Did I just drop my kids off on a Saturday morning and go on my way?  Mitch would have been 11 and able to locate a hospital room on his own with Anna in tow, but still.  Hopefully at the very least I had something important to do and came up to say hi and then left.  Egads.

For no particular reason, here is a fun photo of Grandpa and Tom.  I sure miss that place.

To the hospital we go

Wed., November 13, 2002 - Bill took me for dental appointment at 8:00!!  Then to Wahoo - permanent in the afternoon.  Bill & Jenny brought me back to Lincoln after a supper with the whole family.
Thurs., November 14, 2002 - Sick all day.  Nancy came in evening-- called "Ask A Nurse".  She stayed all night.  Myrtle called.
Fri., November 15, 2002 - Nancy called Dr. Semin's office.  He said to go to the emergency room at Bryan East.  Were at the ER at about 10:00 a.m.  Dale came in the p.m.  In my room between 5:30 & 6:00.  Mary & the kids came to see me just as they were taking me to my room.  In ER they took x-rays & echogram.  Kids ate the extra supper they brought me.  Tom stopped by before he had to bowl.

Plenty more on this saga in upcoming posts.

Not feeling well

Sat., November 9, 2002 - Talked to Greta.
Sun., November 10, 2002 - Nancy here for usual Sunday activities.
Mon., November 11, 2002 - Cards in evening.
Tues., November 12, 2002 -

I've read ahead a little bit, but even without doing so I may have suspected that Grandma wasn't feeling well during this stretch.  Short entries and even one day with nothing, which was unusual for her.  Stay tuned.

For no particular reason, here's a photo of my baby guineas shortly after I first bought them.  They are much bigger now but not yet ready to go out into the big wide world to eat bugs.  They need to stay in the coop a bit longer before they get to do that.

Disrespect to Maude

Tues., November 5, 2002 - Nancy came from work & we went to Staufer's Cafe.  Busy there.  We had chicken fried steak & delicious pie!  The driver this morning for the Handi-Van line was lazy!!!  He didn't even show me how to buckle the seat belt -- didn't help with the walker either getting on or off the bus!!
Wed., November 6, 2002 - No Book Club tonight.  Saw some good shows on TV.
Thurs., November 7, 2002 - Myrtle called in a.m.

Must have been a very intense day for six exclamation points to show up on just one day's activities, five of them bad exclamation points.

And in honor of the exclamation point (called the exclamation mark outside of the U.S.), here is something from wikipedia:

"Graphically the exclamation mark is represented as a full stop point with a vertical line above. One theory of its origin is that it is derived from a Latin exclamation of joy (io). The modern graphical representation is believed to have been born in the Middle Ages. Medieval copyists wrote the Latin word io at the end of a sentence to indicate joy. The word io meant "hurray". Over time, the i moved above the o, and the o became smaller, becoming a point.

The exclamation mark was first introduced into English printing in the 15th century to show emphasis, and was called the "sign of admiration or exclamation" or the "note of admiration" until the mid-17th century.

The exclamation mark did not have its own dedicated key on standard manual typewriters before the 1970s. Instead, one typed a period, backspaced, and typed an apostrophe. In the 1950s, secretarial dictation and typesetting manuals in America referred to the mark as "bang", perhaps from comic books where the ! appeared in dialogue balloons to represent a gun being fired, although the nickname probably emerged from letterpress printing. This bang usage is behind the names of the interrobang, an unconventional typographic character, and a shebang line, a feature of Unix computer systems.  In the printing world, the exclamation mark can be called a screamer, a gasper, a slammer, or a startler."

Boo Notre Dame

Sat., November 2, 2002 - Talked to Greta in afternoon.  Nancy called after the football game.  Was disappointed that Nebraska lost but elated that Notre Dame was defeated by an un-ranked team from the East.
Sun., November 3, 2002 - Nancy came about 10:30.  We went to the Village Inn for brunch.  Then grocery shopping & then to my apartment.  Nancy washed my sweater & double knit dresses.  I showered & we played a few games of Rummikub.  A most enjoyable day.
Mon., November 4, 2002 - I played cards in evening -- won 1 game.  Dolores treated with cake & coffee.  She said the cake was for Wayne's birthday which was Sat. but it was also for her birthday which is tomorrow.

I have no logical reason for it, but I like it when Notre Dame loses also.

I did a double-take when I read Grandma talking about Wayne.  Obviously, it wasn't Nancy's Wayne but still . . .

For no particular reason, here's a photo of a tree I planted several years ago.  It was a fuzzy stick about my height at that time.

An Affair to Remember

Wed., October 30, 2002 - Attended Book Club this evening.  Greta called Nancy & Nancy called me that Marie Parker died today.
Thurs., October 31, 2002 - I called Myrtle this morning. Annabelle called to tell me about Marie.  The funeral will be Saturday but I'm not up to traveling that far.  Tom came for supper, laundry & my shower.  Mary & the kid came for Trick or Treat.  (Mitch didn't go for Trick etc.  He stayed home & passed out goodies to those who came.)  Anna was a Jack in the Box.  Very clever costume.
Fri., November 1, 2002 - This evening saw the movie "An Affair to Remember".  Good show.

Oh, yes.  An Affair to Remember.  So lovely, so tragic, so enjoyable to watch.

This last weekend, there was a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Bill and Jenny at the care facility where she lives.  Such a nice turnout and I am so glad the decision was made to mark the occasion.  Jenny wasn't able to enjoy it as we all wish she would have been, but maybe she felt the happiness and love in the room.  It would be great if I had a photo of the wedding to post, but I don't so a movie poster will have to do.

The things that stay with us

Sun., October 27, 2002 - Mary & the kids came after dinner.  Mary left to do cleaning for a lady.  The kids & I played UNO.  When Mary came back she ironed for me.  Mitch turned all the clocks back.  The 3 Yosts played several games of UNO before they went home.
Mon., October 28, 2002 - Played cards downstairs in evening.  Stopped at Dolores' afterward & played Rummikub.
Tues., October 29, 2002 - Papa died 82 years ago today.  I feel so bad that I remember so little about him.  The HandiVan took me for my hairdo & Mary brought me home.

I never recall Grandma mentioning the anniversary of her father's death, but obviously it was a date that she remembered, even 82 years later.

A quick trip north

Thurs., October 24, 2002 - Myrtle called.  Tom came a little later than usual.  He traded off his truck for a car.  The truck had poor mileage.  He will go to Winside Saturday for a load of wood for Nancy.  I'm going along & be at Greta's.  I called Greta tonight to warn her.
Fri., October 25, 2002 - Nancy came right after work for me.  We met Don & Linda Retzlaf at Nancy's place and then went to Staufer's Restaurant for supper.  We had a real nice visit & a good supper.
Sat., October 26, 2002 - Tom came a little after 8:00.  We had dinner with Greta & Lester.  I showed Greta a new Solitaire game. Started back to Lincoln after 2:00.  Tom & Nancy unloaded the wood.  Nancy brought me home so Tom could take the pickup truck to the dealer & get his new car.

I don't believe I have much to say about these entries, really.  Sure do miss going up to Winside for this or that, though.

One year in

Mon., October 21, 2002 - Played cards in evening.  I won 1 game but Ethel won 4.  Afterwards I went to Dolores' & we played Rummikub.
Tues, October 22, 2002 - Year ago I started living here.  Delores took me to have my hair washed, etc.  I went to her place in evening & we played Rummikub.  Rained in the evening.
Wed., October 23, 2002 - Snowing today.  The snow looks so pretty on the  yellow trees -- have a much prettier sight from the 7th floor.  Had a fake fire alarm in the morning -- something went haywire in the boiler room.  Attended Book Club in evening.

I still remember the day Grandma moved in.  Well, the day she first saw her unit anyway.  It was late and I was doing last-minute painting (thanks Dale for helping, too).  It was quiet so I heard the elevator "ding" even at Grandma's end of the hall.  I got off the ladder and peeked out the door to see Grandma with Maude (her walker) coming hell bent for election from the elevator to the door.  She (Grandma) was very much in a hurry to see her new place.  Obviously she didn't spend the night there since a ladder was the only stick of furniture around, but she got to lay eyes on her new home anyway.  And she was very pleased.

The quality isn't overly good, but here's a photo during Grandma's early years in Lincoln.  The kids and I had her and Nancy over for a meal.  I don't remember the main dish, but do recall the major goof-ups in getting the dessert made.  Here they are enjoying(?) it anyway.

Western, schmestern

Fri., October 18, 2002 - Went to main lobby & saw a movie - a Western with Dean Martin.  Residents with VCR are showing a movie on Fri. night.
Sat., October 19, 2002 - Dale came for me about 5:30 & took me to his place.  Kyleah was home, Lynn was in Omaha & Dane was at a banquet.  Dale went for Chinese food for our supper.  After supper we played Rummikub.  Lynn's mother came & visited a while.  When Dale went for Dane he took me home.  A real good evening.
Sun., October 20, 2002 - Nancy came in a.m with my groceries.  I showered & then we went to Boston Market for our noon meal.  We stopped at the Family Dollar Store!!! We didn't play Rummikub today -- too tired.

There is more than one western with Dean Martin in it, so I don't know what movie Grandma saw.  There's plenty of information to be found about the man himself, but I will stop at just this, from wikipedia:

"Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 7, 1917, in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of Italian father Gaetano Alfonso Crocetti (1894–1967) and Italian-American mother Angela Crocetti (nĂ©e Barra; 1899–1966). His parents were married in 1914. His father, who was a barber, was originally from Montesilvano, Abruzzo, and his mother's origins are also believed to be from Abruzzo, although they are not clearly known. Martin had an older brother named William Alfonso Crocetti (1916–1968). His first language was Italian and he did not speak English until he started school at the age of five. He attended Grant Elementary School in Steubenville, where he was bullied for his broken English. As a teenager, he played the drums as a hobby. He dropped out of Steubenville High School in the tenth grade because he thought he was smarter than his teachers. He bootlegged liquor, worked in a steel mill, served as a croupier at a speakeasy and a blackjack dealer, and was a welterweight boxer.

At 15, he was a boxer who billed himself as "Kid Crochet". His prizefighting earned him a broken nose (later straightened), a scarred lip, many broken knuckles (a result of not being able to afford tape used to wrap boxers' hands), and a bruised body. Of his 12 bouts, he said that he "won all but 11". For a time, he shared a New York City apartment with Sonny King, who was also starting in show business and had little money. The two reportedly charged people to watch them bare-knuckle box each other in their apartment, fighting until one was knocked out. Martin knocked out King in the first round of an amateur boxing match. Martin gave up boxing to work as a roulette stickman and croupier in an illegal casino behind a tobacco shop, where he had started as a stock boy. At the same time, he sang with local bands, calling himself "Dino Martini" (after the Metropolitan Opera tenor Nino Martini). He got his break working for the Ernie McKay Orchestra. He sang in a crooning style influenced by Harry Mills of the Mills Brothers, among others. In the early 1940s, he started singing for bandleader Sammy Watkins, who suggested he change his name to Dean Martin.

In October 1941, Martin married Elizabeth "Betty" Anne McDonald in Cleveland, Ohio, and the couple had an apartment in Cleveland Heights for a while. They eventually had four children before the marriage ended in 1949. Martin worked for various bands throughout the early 1940s, mostly on looks and personality until he developed his own singing style. He flopped at the Riobamba nightclub in New York, when he followed Frank Sinatra in 1943."

I didn't know Grandma was so fond of Family Dollar.  Glad she was excited to go.

Sandwiches

Tues., October 15, 2002 - This was my dad's birthday.  Had my hair washed, etc.  Nancy came after work & took me to "Jim's", a place that specializes in home health.  New "skis" were put on my walker -- take the place of the tennis balls (Called Greta to report on dental deal).  We then went to Staufers' Restaurant & had chicken fried steak, etc.  Was really good.
Wed., October 16, 2002 - Went to Book Club in evening.
Thurs., October 17, 2002 - Called Myrtle this morning.  Also called Marjorie C.  Tom came in evening & brought some special sandwiches.  The usual routine of laundry, shower & Rummikub.

Speaking of special sandwiches . . . Mitch, Mom and I hosted 15 of our family members (plus Tanner and Willa) for a meal Sunday at Mom's of traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches.  Well, we researched and were as traditional as we could manage.  We were a bit nervous as to whether everyone would like the nutty, malty Danish bread but very little of anything went in the trash at the end of the meal.

Afterwards, some of us played Squeak -- something we had not done after a family meal in a very long time.  Needless to say, it was great fun.  So glad everyone could come and that they enjoyed our efforts.  We should probably do it again sometime, I think.

Rummikub extravaganza

Sat., October 12, 2002 - Dolores brought bananas and milk.  They were on sale at Hy-Vee & I paid her for them.  We haven't played Rummikub this week - she has had a very sore leg - almost sounds like the sciatica I used to have.  Greta called in p.m.
Sun., October 13, 2002 - Nancy & I went to Mary's church -- All Saints Lutheran.  We had dinner at KFC's.  Went to Penney's & I bought a fall weight coat.  Then to apartment -- took a nap -- then showered & then 2 games of Rummikub.
Mon., October 14, 2002 - Bill came at 11:00.  We went to a restaurant & met Jenny & Patty.  We had lunch & then Patty & Jenny went shopping & Bill took me to the dental school at the university. Impressions were taken for both upper & lower dentures.  Bill & I played several games of Rummikub.  In evening I played cards & won 3 games.

Grandma and Dolores might not have played Rummikub lately but it looks like Grandma got her fill over the next couple of days.  And of course she paid for her bananas and milk.  We wouldn't imagine it any other way, would we?

In honor of Dorothy Jo's birthday earlier this week, here's a photo of her place I've always liked.  Simple, but as I recall she was showing the other ladies some of her flowers and I happened to catch this picture.

Posted without a title, and now I'm fixing that

Wed., October 9, 2002 - Called Raymond Iversen.  Went to Book Club in evening.
Thurs., October 10, 2002 - Tom came in evening for the usual routine.  Cool enough to have chili soup.  Myrtle called in a.m.
Fri., October 11, 2002 - Have seen some good movies -- among them "The Pink Submarine" & "Casablanca".  Mary & kids here in evening.

Not finding a movie named "The Pink Submarine", I wonder if Grandma meant "Operation Petticoat".  In any event, I hope she saw the latter as I recall it being pretty funny.

Here's some information on the movie from wikipedia, much shortened from what was available:

The film tells in flashback the misadventures of the fictional U. S. Navy submarine, USS Sea Tiger, during the opening days of the United States involvement in World War II. Some elements of the screenplay were taken from actual incidents that happened with some of the Pacific Fleet's submarines during the war. Other members of the cast include several actors who went on to become television stars in the 1960s and 1970s: Gavin MacLeod of The Love Boat and McHale's Navy, Marion Ross of Happy Days, and Dick Sargent of Bewitched.

Some of the plot points of Operation Petticoat were based on real-life incidents, such as:

     The evacuation of one Navy nurse and several Army nurses from Corregidor to Australia by the submarine USS Spearfish;
     The sinking of the submarine USS Sealion at the pier at Cavite Navy Yard in the Philippines;
     The torpedoing of a bus by the USS Bowfin;
     Captain Sherman's letter to the supply department at Cavite on the inexplicable lack of toilet paper (based on an actual letter to the supply department of Mare Island Naval Shipyard by Lieutenant Commander James Wiggins "Red" Coe of the submarine USS Skipjack);
     The need to paint a submarine pink because of a lack of enough red or white lead undercoat -- heat from the burning USS Sealion also scorched off the black paint on the nearby USS Seadragon; for a time, the submarine fought with only her red lead undercoat visible. This led Tokyo Rose to disparage American "red pirate submarines";
Another possible source for the "pink" submarine is the decorated USS Harder, commanded by Samuel David Dealey. Under the belief that a pinkish tint would help with camouflage, especially near dawn and dusk, Dealey added pink to the light grey that was standard for the Navy's Measure 32 paint scheme.

Dannebrog

Sun., October 6, 2002 - Nancy brought casserole of sauerkraut & noodles for dinner.  She tended to the laundry & ironed several dresses for me.
Mon., October 7, 2002 - Nancy, Mary, Mitch & I went to Dannebrog in the evening to hear a choir of Danish High School students.  The group of 37 students & 10 adult sponsors were touring in U.S.  Dannebrog was chosen because the name means "Danish flag."  They had been in St. Louis -- were going to go to Minneapolis also Disneyland.  A wonderful group of singers.
Tues., October 8, 2002 - Handi Van took me to the College of Hair Design.  Mary took me home.

Another event I remember.  I wonder if Anna went too, and that Grandma just missed adding her to the list.  I can't imagine why she wouldn't have gone.

Here's a nice little article involving Denmark and its flag:

https://www.howtoliveindenmark.com/stories-about-life-in-denmark/the-danish-flag-800-years-old-and-going-out-of-fashion/

All of 2019, the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa has an exhibition celebrating the 800 years of the Danish flag.  I think we should go before the year is out.

Sorry!

Thurs., October 3, 2002 - Talked to Myrtle in a.m.  Called Tom about 6:00 p.m.  He had forgotten it was Thursday.  They've been busy with company.
Fri., October 4, 2002 - Mitch & Anna here for supper.  We played Sorry and watched TV.  A very enjoyable evening.
Sat., October 5, 2002 - Talked to Greta late in the afternoon.  Just about forgot to call her!!!

I'm getting a bit better now but think I'll take the opportunity to say Sorry! for the lack of posts of late.  Perhaps once I retire I'll be much closer to the daily posts I used to manage.

I read up on Sorry! a bit and was somewhat displeased to read there were rule changes in 2013 that made everything easier and friendlier -- making it less cutthroat than I remember.  I'm not sure what that says about me, though.  Of course, the purists such as myself can play by whatever edition of the rules they want to.

Been busy in 2019

Mon., September 30, 2002 - Played cards in evening.  I won the $20 football pool for Saturday's game.  Bob B. served cake & coffee.
Tues., October 1, 2002 - Nancy took me to the doctor.  I have 2 more kinds of pills -- one for my sore foot & one for my heart.  Dolores called in middle of afternoon.  Invited me to supper.  I went down at 5:30 -- she had roast beef, gravy, potatoes, carrots, cottage cheese & sliced tomatoes.  Everything tasted so good.  We played several games of Rummikub.
Wed., October 2, 2002 - Dolores took me to the beauty school.  When I called for the HandyVan for Wed. they were booked up.  Mary took me home.  Went to Book Club in evening.

Grandma had some things going on in 2002, but it's been rather busy here in 2019, also.  Mom, Nancy, Anna and I were down to Arizona to surprise Mitch for his graduation from Arizona State University last week.  Anna flew and the rest of us drove, and Mitch was shocked to see each and every one of us.  Speaking for the group, I think I can say we all had a marvelous time.  Congratulations, Mitch!!

A little trip out of town

Fri., September 27, 2002 - Merilyn brought Raymond I. here at noon.  We spent the afternoon playing Kings Wild.  Tom came after work for Raymond.
Sat., September 28, 2002 - This morning Mary, Mitch, Anna, Per (Mar's friend from Denmark), Nancy & I drove out to the Danish Cemetery 7 miles north of Lincoln.  A small but well kept cemetery -- was started in 1890.  I didn't wander around much --- was cold, windy & sprinkled a little.  Nancy & I had dinner (at noon) at Popeye's.  She brought me to the apt. & then went home.  I slept most of the afternoon.
Sun., September 29, 2002 - Nancy came in p.m.  She fixed grilled cheese sandwiches.  I showered & then Nancy went home.

I remember the trip to the Danish Cemetery.  As I recall we really had no reason to go, other than we all had driven by it numerous times whenever we were on Hwy. 77 and were curious.  And I can confirm that it was cloudy and drizzly.

A quick look online shows the cemetery has about 250 burials, the most recent in 2018.  The earliest year of birth I found for someone buried there is 1829.  And as one might guess, there are several people buried there that were born in Denmark.

A bit less hectic

Tues., September 24, 2002 - Played Seven-Up this evening, I won a game.  Delores fed us pie and ice cream.  She came here afterwards -- brought some tomatoes -- we played 2 games of Rummikub.  I forgot to call the "van line" so at last minute Grace took me to the "beauty college" & Mary came after me.
Wed., September 25, 2002 - To Book Club in evening.  Just Bob Johnson, Virginia, Carol Jean & I were there.
Thurs., September 26, 2002 - Myrtle called this morning.  Tom & Raymond Iversen here this evening.  Tom brought food from Applebee's -- really good.  I showered & we played Rummikub.  Since Nancy had attended to the laundry Sunday there wasn't enough for Tom to do.

For no real reason, here's a photo of Grandpa and Uncle Raymond.  I love their bare feet and Uncle Raymond's curled toes -- must have been very good sweet corn.

I'd sleep, too

Sat., September 21, 2002 - Left at 8:00 for Lincoln.  Went to Nancy's first and then they brought me to the apt.  We got Raymond and then we went to Valentino's for dinner.  Too much good food to choose from.  They then took me to my apt. and went their way.  Raymond was going back to Winside with Greta.  Greta did some shopping and saw her "kids".  I slept the rest of the day!
Sun., September 22, 2002 - Jean Hansen called.  Luayne was in Lincoln and she called just to visit.  I called Ray & Aileen -- yesterday was Aileen's birthday and their 55th wedding anniversary.  Nancy came at noon -- had cornbread for dinner.  Usual shower, etc.  She also did the laundry.
Mon., September 23, 2002 - Membership meeting tonight -- so no cards.  Had apple pie a la mode for lunch -- real good.

More being busy for Grandma.  It's a wonder we didn't wear her out completely once she moved down to Lincoln.  I can say with confidence that she didn't mind and told us if she wasn't up to our taking her hither and yon.

Added this photo because of the mention of Uncle Raymond and because I miss all these wonderful people.

Big stuff

Wed., September 18, 2002 - After work Nancy took me to North Bend where we met Greta.  Then I went on to Winside.  Raymond Iversen flew into Lincoln at 9:00 P.M. -- for a 2 weeks visit.
Thurs., September 19, 2002 - Called Myrtle in A.M. - pretended I was still in Lincoln.  Then to Rabe's to get my quilt that Arlene had quilted.  Visited & had coffee & cookies.  Then to cafe for chicken fried steak.  Met Lena, Edna & Otto Carstens there.  Elsie Janke had a doctor's appointment so I didn't see her.  Lester fell & Greta had to go home so she didn't eat with us.  In P.M. we went to Myrtle's.  Lois told us not to tell her too far ahead of time we were coming -- she gets all worked up & tries to do things.  Had a real nice visit.  Greta & I played Rummikub in evening.
Fri., September 20, 2002 - Went to Oberle's in morning.  Happened to see Dorothy Jo as she was headed for the bank.  She came to the house & we had a lovely visit.  In P.M. we went to see Sophia Morris.  John is in the nursing home -- he's getting Alzheimer's & Sophia couldn't take care of him.  She still crochets & pieces quilts but is hard of hearing.  Rather hard to visit with her.  Rummikub in evening.

Busy few days for Grandma leading to longer diary entries for her.  Giving me carpal tunnel syndrome here.

Chicken fried steak is one of those foods I absolutely love but don't have often, which is likely a good thing for my waistline.  Photo from the Food Network.

Just stuff

Sun., September 15, 2002 - Nancy & I to IHOP for brunch.  Then grocery shopping & I really splurged.  Back to the apartment for "nap" & shower.
Mon., September 16, 2002 - Tired in morning.  The card group came here to play this evening.  The Party Room was being used.  Wayne, Bob, Jim, Grace & Ethel were here.  I won 3 games!!!
Tues., September 17, 2002 - Usual hair do.  Mary couldn't come after me so Dolores helped out.  Tom & Maria here a little while in evening.

I had a bit of a start when I saw the name Wayne, but obviously it wasn't Nancy's Wayne.  Just took me by surprise.  But, I'm a bit sleep deprived lately due to two rejected baby goats I have the pleasure of feeding every four hours.  Thankfully they have each other for company and warmth and don't have to live in the house.  Not sure how they will do, but they sure are cute.  I'm calling them Bobby and Cissy.

Out and abouting on a safari

Thur., September 12, 2002 - Tom renewed or added to my ATT calling card.  Called Myrtle in a.m.  Baked banana bread & sticky rolls.  Tom here for supper.  He brought food from Applebee's -- good barbecued ribs.  Laundry & shower as usual.
Fri., September 13, 2002 - Rained this morning.  I started reading Bob Kerrey's "When I was a Young Man".  Irene Johnson gave it to me at Book Club thinking I'd enjoy it.
Sat., September 14, 2002 - Nancy, Mitch, Dane & I went to the Safari at Mahoney State Park.  We saw elk, buffalo, sand hill cranes, pelicans, deer and wild turkeys.  Nancy, Mitch & Dane took a 1/4 mile hike.  They saw a wolf & some bears.  We ate at a pizza place in Ashland.  On way home we stopped at Dairy Queen.  Had a most enjoyable day.  Cloudy at first but never too hot.

Nancy, if you had photos and was missing a date for them, I have one for you right here.

I can imagine they all did have a great time.

My memory . . . pfft

Mon., Sept. 9, 2002 - Talked to Annabelle.  Marie isn't too good -- she's had two slight strokes. Played Seven-Up this evening.
Tues., Sept. 10, 2002 - Martha R. brought me the recipe for Brunch Casserole.  Helen D. brought me some Sesame snacks.  She got them at a special store & asked if I'd like some.  I'll pay her next Monday.  Had my hair-do as usual.  In evening Dolores brought her son Mike & his wife here to see my apt. -- especially the plates.
Wed., Sept. 11, 2002 - Went to Book Club in evening.  Dolores came afterwards & we played Rummikub.

I'm guessing Grandma is referring to her Danish plates.  Darned if I can recall where they were in her place and how many she had on display.

A somewhat busy weekend

Fri., Sept. 6, 2002 - Dolores came this evening and we played Rummikub.
Sat., Sept. 7, 2002 - Talked to Greta today.  This evening Dolores & I  went to east side of building.  Folks gather there in the evenings of nice weather.
Sun., Sept. 8, 2002 - Nancy & I went to All Saints Luth. Church - that's were Mary & family go.  After church we ate at Popeye's -- then to the grocery store & then to my apt.  After a nap I showered & then soaked my feet for a pedicure.  We played some Rummikub.

It's me here in 2019 and I'm tired of winter now.

Yes, I am related to Grandma

Tues., September 3, 2002 - Mini-van took me to the "hair do" place & Mary took me home.  Dolores came in evening -- we played one game of Scrabble & 2 games of Rummikub.  I played all my letters on my first play in Scrabble!!!  Never did that before.
Wed., September 4, 2002 - Not much doing today.  I skipped Book Club -- didn't feel like going.  Listened to the book tape Mary brought me from the library.
Thurs., September 5, 2002 - I pulled a boner today -- went down to get the mail & grabbed the fingernail clipper instead of my keys.  Went to Bernice's & Dale called Bob Johnson to unlock my door!!!  Tom came in the evening for the usual routine.  Myrtle called in a.m.

I had to chuckle reading that Grandma grabbed something other than her keys when she left.  That is very much the kind of thing I would do, and have done.  I can hear her laughing about it.

I sure wish she had recorded the word she played in Scrabble.  Also wished I played more Scrabble.  Might have to dust off the board one of these days.

No way

Sat., August 31, 2002 - Greta called in a.m.  Nancy came in a.m.  She had been to the Farmers' Market -- brought me some potatoes, radishes and green onions.  Lois Bowers here in p.m.  She came for the State Fair.  Marie Parker isn't too well.  After supper I played Rummikub at Delores' apt.
Sun, Sept. 1, 2002 - Nancy came at noon -- she brought "corn chowder" for our dinner.  Nancy washed sheets, a blanket and mattress pad for me -- also flipped the mattress.  Helen Jones called in p.m.  According to her Raymond I. still might come to visit.
Mon., Sept. 2, 2002 - Nancy came at noon so I could shower (forgot to do it yesterday).  Played Seven-Up tonight.  I treated with some Kit-Kat bars.

Nancy touched green onions long enough to buy them for Grandma?  Don't believe it.  Maybe she coerced the seller to pick out her purchase and bag it without Nancy having to make contact.  That makes more sense to me.

My information shows Marie Parker died in October 2002.

And here from wikipedia, is more than you ever knew there was to know about Kit Kat bars:

"The origins of what is now known as the Kit Kat brand go back to 1911, when Rowntree's, a confectionery company based in York in the United Kingdom, trademarked the terms Kit Cat and Kit Kat. The original four-finger bar was developed after a worker at Rowntree's York Factory put a suggestion in a recommendation box for a snack that "a man could take to work in his pack". The bar launched on 29 August 1935, under the title of Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp (priced at 2d), and was sold in London and throughout southern England.

Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp was renamed Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp in 1937, the same year that Kit Kat began to incorporate "Break" into its recognisable advertising strategy. The colour scheme and first flavour variation to the brand came in 1942, owing to World War II, when food shortages prompted an alteration in the recipe. The flavour of Kit Kat was changed to dark chocolate; the packaging abandoned its Chocolate Crisp title, and was coloured blue. After the war the name became Kit Kat, with the original milk chocolate recipe and red packaging.

Following its success in the United Kingdom, in the 1940s Kit Kat was exported to Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1958, Donald Gilles, the executive at JWT Orland, created the iconic advertising line "Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat". The brand further expanded in the 1970s when Rowntree created a new distribution factory in Germany to meet European demand, and established agreements to distribute the brand in the US through the Hershey company, and in Japan through Fujiya.

In June 1988, Swiss company Nestlé acquired Kit Kat through the purchase of Rowntree's, giving Nestlé global control over the brand, except in the US, and production and distribution increased with new facilities in Japan and additional manufacturing operations set up in Malaysia, India and China.

The Hershey Company has a licence to produce Kit Kat bars in the United States which dates from 1970, when Hershey executed a licensing agreement with Rowntree which allowed Hershey to retain the Kit Kat licence so long as Hershey was not sold. Nestlé, which has a substantial presence in the US, had to honour the licensing agreement when it bought Rowntree in 1988. As Kit Kat is one of Hershey's top five brands in the US market, the Kit Kat licence was a key factor in Hershey's failed attempt to attract a serious buyer in 2002.

Variants in the traditional chocolate bar first appeared in 1996 when Kit Kat Orange, the first flavour variant, was introduced in the United Kingdom. Its success was followed by several varieties including mint and caramel, and in 1999 Kit Kat Chunky was launched and received favourably by international consumers. Variations on the traditional Kit Kat have continued to be developed since then. In 2000 Nestlé acquired Fujiya's share of the brand in Japan, and also expanded its marketplace in Japan, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela, in addition to markets in Eastern and Central Europe. Throughout the decade Kit Kat introduced dozens of flavours and line extensions within specific consumer markets. It celebrated its 75th anniversary on 10 October 2009.

The traditional bar has four fingers which each measure approximately 1 centimetre (0.4 in) by 9 centimetres (3.5 in). A two-finger bar was launched in the 1930s, and has remained the company's best-selling biscuit brand ever since. The 1999 Kit Kat Chunky (known as Big Kat and Kit Kat Extra Crispy in the US) has one large finger approximately 2.5 centimetres (1 in) wide. Kit Kat bars contain varying numbers of fingers depending on the market, ranging from the half-finger sized Kit Kat Petit in Japan, to the three-fingered variants in Arabia, and the twelve-finger family-size bars in Australia and France. Kit Kat bars are sold individually and in bags, boxes and multi-packs. In Ireland, France, the UK and America Nestlé also produces a Kit Kat ice cream, and in Australia and Malaysia, Kit Kat Drumsticks.

In 2010, a new £5 million manufacturing line was opened by NestlĂ© in York, to produce more than a billion Kit Kat bars each year."

I hear that, zzzzzzz

Wed., August 28, 2002 - Played Rummikub at Dolores' this afternoon.  She bought her own set.  Tonite to Book Club.  I reported on "Once Upon a Town".  Mary has checked out 2 books on tape from the Public Library for me.  Now I have to train myself to listen without going to sleep.
Thurs., August 29, 2002 -Tom came as usual for the laundry, etc.  He brought our supper -- Salisbury Steak for him and chicken for me. Talked to Myrtle.
Fri., August 30, 2002 - Mitch & Anna here for supper.  We played Rummikub.  Mary came later & we watched TV and visited.

I have to be careful listening to audio books as they can sometimes put me to sleep.  Then I have to back up and find the spot I last remembered hearing.  Thankfully the books I have been listening to on my commute to and from work are fairly exciting, so no dozing for me while driving.

Some really good times were had in Grandma's unit at Pioneer House.  If I'm not mistaken, we can see three of her windows in this photo.

I had to look back to recall -- Once Upon a Town was the book about the North Platte Canteen -- in case anyone else reading this also forgot.

I have a few spellings for Grandma's friend Delores/Dolores.  I will simply use whichever one Grandma uses.

Celebrating

Sun., August 25, 2002 - Nancy & I celebrated (I don't know what) and went to the Pancake House for brunch.  In p.m. Nancy vacuumed, etc. - I showered & we played 2 games of Rummikub.
Mon., August 26, 2002 - Cousin Merle Knicker came in the evening.  Nancy came, too.  Arnold stayed in the car with their dog -- didn't know if pets were allowed.  We had a real nice visit.
Tues., August 27, 2002 - A larger van came this week to take me to the College of Hair Design.  Worked out just fine.

I think it's fantastic that seemingly there was nothing really to celebrate, but they did anyway.  I'm sure Grandma would have mentioned if something truly eventful was the cause of the celebratory brunch.

Was it Cousin Merle that had the health food store in California?  I remember someone coming to visit in Winside and they brought carob-coated treats with them.  I had not heard of carob before that day.

Tiresome? Surely not

Thurs., August 22, 2002 - Nancy came tonite for laundry, etc.  Tom wasn't able to make it.  She brought hamburgers and french fries from Runza.
Fri., August 23, 2002 - Nancy came in morning.  We went to the storeroom in the basement.  Sorted through the boxes and in p.m. put dishes, etc. away.  A tiresome job.
Sat., August 24, 2002 - A brunch at 10:00 a.m. given by floors 6 and 7.  I just paid my share.  They had a good egg-like casserole and rolls.  I called Greta in p.m.

I can't imagine that sorting through boxes and putting things away whilst hanging out with Grandma would be a tiresome thing at all.

Speaking of Runza, since it is January here in 2019, it's Temperature Tuesdays at Runza -- for January and February both, I believe.  The temperature at 7:00 a.m. is the price of a Runza so long as you buy fries and a drink, too.  Sometimes they are free (temp of 0 degrees or below) and today they are going to be really cheap.  However, it is cold enough for me that I don't want to venture out, cheap meal or no.  So, it's lunch from home for me.  Photo from Runza's webpage.

Hair appointments

Mon., August 19, 2002 - School started today for Jayson.  Played Seven-Up in evening.  Delores came after card game and we played Rummikub.
Tues., August 20, 2002 - Used my special card today to take car or van to hair appointment.  A mini-van came for me.  My appointment is at 11:00 a.m. and I call Mary when I'm ready to go home.  The ride costs only $2.00.  This way Mary doesn't have to take time from her job.
Wed., August 21, 2002 - Skipped Book Club tonite -- didn't feel too spry.

Grandma did fret plenty with our previous arrangement where I took her to her appointment and then waited until she was done to take her home.  Sometimes we had to wait longer than other times for her even to get to a chair and then with students learning and such, sometimes it was quite awhile before all was said and done.  I didn't mind at all, but Grandma came up with this compromise so all I had to do was scamper off once she was done and then pick her up and take her home.  Of course, we did lunch before I took off to work again.  We always had a nice visit.

Here's a photo of Grandma having a particularly good hair day up in Winside and Nancy very seriously contemplating where to put the taters and gravy (guessing that's what's in that bowl).

A bit quieter

Fri., August 16, 2002 - Mary, Mitch & Anna came this evening.  We played Seven-Up, Rummikub & then visited.
Sat., August 17, 2002 - Nothing much, just puttered around.  Greta called in a.m.
Sun., August 18, 2002 - Nancy came at noon and brought Boston Market chicken dinner for us.  Then the usual shower, vacuuming & playing Rummikub.

I've not much to say about this, so I'll just share this graphic.  I've tried to find the source and have been unsuccessful, but it is as cute as can be.  At least in my humble opinion.

Tuesday, January 8, 2019

A pretty full three days

Tues., August 13, 2002 - Had my usual hair-do.  Delores came in evening and we played Rummikub.
Wed., August 14, 2002 - Went to Book Club in evening.  I'm reading "Once Upon a Town" by Bob Greene.  It's the story about the North Platte Canteen during WWII.
Thurs., August 15, 2002 - Myrtle called in a.m.  Irene Johnson invited me to her apt. for coffee this p.m.  Carol Jean Griffin & Gertrude Widera [?] were there, too.  Had a very nice visit & enjoyed cake with a good topping along with coffee.  Irene sent 2 pieces home with me.  Tom & I enjoyed it along with our supper.  Usual laundry & shower & Rummikub.

I haven't read the book but have read some articles about the North Platte Canteen.  Really an exceptional thing they did; not that other caring and giving activities weren't going on all around the country for the war effort.  But still, something Nebraska can certainly be proud of.

The photo is from history.nebraska.gov.  I doesn't show any cakes but one of the articles I read talked about how the volunteers always had birthday cakes on hand to give to any service member having a birthday.  In one article, one man said it was his birthday so he could have a cake, but it wasn't.  The guy was shamed by his friends and ended up taking it back.

Back at it with my 1,000th post

Sat., August 10, 2002 - Nothing much today, just puttered around.
Sun., August 11, 2002 - Usual day -- Nancy came , did some work, ironed a mess of dresses.  I showered and we played Rummikub.  Of course, we ate dinner.
Mon., August 12, 2002 - Nancy took Kyleah & me to Kearney to see the Platte River Arch -- sort of a history of Nebraska.  Very, very interesting & impressive.  Went to card club in the evening.

Welcome (back) to 2002 and to my 1,000th post of this little blog.  Crazy, I know.

I seem to remember some particular memory of Nancy's and/or Kyleah's regarding this particular trip.  Maybe it was just that a point was made to do something with each great-grandkid by themselves rather than in a mob.  Not sure.

I've been to the arch myself once.  As Grandma said, it is very interesting.  For some reason, one of the things I remember most is watching the cars pass by on the interstate underneath.  Not exactly the point of the arch, so that's not so good on my part.  I do vaguely remember other things we saw that day, though, too.  Photo from journalstar.com

I found where I left off

I will start up again soon, but wanted to report I not only went back in the blog and found where it was that I switched from when Grandma was living in Lincoln to back to the 1930s before she was married.  Believe it or not, the switch was in 2013.  Unbelievable, right?

And . . . not only did I find the right spot in the blog, I actually re-located Grandma's diary in my recently-organized desk.  Whoa!  It is going to storm soon for sure now.

New post coming very soon!
